Hugo Achá states on 'Voz News' that 'Raúl Castro must face justice,' explains his arrest could spur transition in Cuba
Regarding the prospects for a democratic transition in Cuba, Achá noted that contacts between the State Department and representatives of the regime in Havana could be part of a broader process.

The security and defense expert and director of research and outreach at the Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba, Hugo Achá, described the progress of U.S. legal actions against Raúl Castro as a "necessary step" and asserted that his age should not be used to evade responsibility for alleged crimes against humanity. During an interview with "Voz News," Achá maintained that the measure sends an important message in defense of human rights and noted that "age and the passage of time are not factors that can diminish a crime against humanity."
The expert also noted that a potential arrest of the former Cuban leader could have repercussions beyond the island. "It is incredibly significant to see one of the greatest criminals that our America has unfortunately produced brought to justice," he said. However, he cautioned that the goal must go beyond a mere arrest: "I believe this precedent would resonate very strongly in other regions, in other places." To illustrate this, he cited the crimes committed in Ukraine and noted that those responsible for atrocities must be held accountable, regardless of how much time has passed.
Regarding the prospects for a democratic transition in Cuba, Achá noted that contacts between the State Department and representatives of the regime in Havana could be part of a broader process. Although he acknowledged that it is still unclear how those talks will unfold, he stated that "the departure of one of the visible faces of the regime's most hardline — and also most criminal — faction could be an important step toward bringing about a transition." The expert expressed his hope that this process will lead to the freedom that Cubans both on and off the island have been waiting for decades.
Achá also leveled harsh criticism at the political and social situation in Western Europe, particularly in France and Spain. "A Europe held hostage. A Europe that political correctness and left-wing leanings have brought almost to the brink of social suicide," he stated. In his view, authorities must restore respect for the law: "It is time to enforce the law. Because only through the law, through the rule of law, and through the defense of rights can we be the West."
Elsewhere in the interview, Achá warned that the United States is not immune to the problems that, according to him, are affecting Europe. The security expert also defended the border security measures promoted by the Trump administration and warned about the exploitation of illegal immigration by criminal organizations. "It could happen again so quickly that I think it's something to reflect on for those of us who will be voting in a few days in the midterm elections," he concluded.
