A journalist was shot and killed on Friday in Mexico, the ninth to be killed so far this year, according to the NGO Article 19.

The victim was Hamurabi Huesca Manzano, owner of a news website with more than 52,000 followers. He was shot in the state of Oaxaca, in the southern part of the country.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has documented the nine journalists who have been murdered.

Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, and most of the murders and attacks go unpunished, according to reports from various NGOs.

Huesca Manzano was also a taxi driver.

Calls for justice

According to the state prosecutor's office report, he was shot and killed when an armed group opened fire on him and two other men.

The reporter's website, Pinotepa Comunica, published news on politics and local issues in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, the city where he lived.

"We demand that the prosecutor's office prioritize journalistic work in its investigation," Article 19 stated on the social media platform X.
