In just four months in office, President Claudia Sheinbaum has far outpaced her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in sending subsidized fuel to Cuba, according to an investigation by Mexicanos Contra la Corrupción y la Impunidad (MCCI), and reported by multiple media outlets.

According to the report, Sheinbaum’s government has shipped more than three times the volume of hydrocarbons to the island compared with what López Obrador sent during the last two years of his six-year term.

The estimated value of these shipments exceeds $3 billion, which MCCI says reveals a policy of continuity and opacity in the Mexican government’s support for the Cuban regime, despite international sanctions on Havana. The data, drawn from customs records and oil shipment reports, show that most deliveries have been made through Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) to Cuban refineries.

Analysts consulted by the organization warned that the scale of the energy support could create diplomatic pressure on Mexico, particularly over the use of public funds for operations benefiting a sanctioned foreign government.

We spoke with lawyer Alicia Galván, president of the Fundación Patria Unida, about the issue and the Cuban regime's interference in the Mexican government.
