American Airlines Flight 1006 between Colorado and Dallas was diverted to Denver Airport after its crew reported "engine vibrations," the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said, AFP reports.

The FAA said the Boeing 737-800 aircraft, "after landing and while taxiing to the gate an engine caught fire and passengers evacuated the aircraft using the slides," the FAA explained.

The airline told local press that there were 172 passengers and six crew members on board the plane. According to airport authorities, all were safely evacuated, but 12 were hospitalized for minor injuries.

Images shared on social media showed a huge plume of smoke and passengers standing on the wing of the plane waiting for emergency services to arrive.
