American rapper and music producer Sean 'Diddy' Combs, 56, reportedly suffered a head injury during a fight with a convicted drug trafficker at the Fort Dix federal prison, in New Jersey, where he is serving a 50-month prison sentence.
According to Page Six magazine, citing a source familiar with the incident, Combs was taken to a hospital in the early hours of Saturday, October 10, after being injured in an altercation with another inmate.
Although the injury required medical attention outside the prison, it was not life-threatening. The artist returned to the correctional facility that same day and was placed back in a solitary confinement unit.
According to People, the altercation reportedly involved Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, a well-known Jamaican drug trafficker who is also serving time at Fort Dix.
The publication reports that tensions arose after an NBC News investigation revealed Combs' alleged privileges within the prison, including access to unauthorized cell phones, alcoholic beverages, and other prohibited items.
The report reportedly led to prison inspections and the confiscation of contraband items, which caused unrest among several inmates, including Coke.
However, the exact circumstances of the altercation have not been officially confirmed.
Conflicting accounts of the injury
The new information contrasts with a version previously reported by Page Six, according to which Combs had accidentally hit his head against a bunk bed in his cell.
The outlet reported that the incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. and that the musician remained conscious and was able to communicate after sustaining the injury.
However, accounts published later by People and TMZ suggest that the injury was the result of a fight inside the prison.
After news of his hospitalization broke, Juda Engelmayer, the artist's spokesperson, told People that Combs' health and well-being were his top priority and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support.
Sentence and controversies in prison
His stay at Fort Dix has been mired in controversy. According to Page Six, the producer has faced disciplinary reports related to fights and the alleged use of unauthorized cell phones.
Furthermore, reports of possible privileges within the prison led to increased scrutiny of his conditions of incarceration.
His scheduled release date was recently changed. According to People, it is currently set for March 2, 2028, after having previously been set for January of that year.
