The owner of the San Francisco 49ers, Jed York, has been suspended for six games and fined $500,000 following his arrest on prostitution-related charges, the NFL reported on Friday.

York was arrested by police in East Palestine, Ohio in August on prostitution-related charges.

According to media reports, York was arrested after responding on August 23 to an ad on a "well-known prostitution website" to arrange a sexual encounter at a mobile home park.

Subsequently, the charges against York were reduced to a misdemeanor for disturbing the peace and possession of tools for committing a crime.

York pleaded not guilty to both charges and was fined $1,150.

However, York's offenses led him to violate the NFL's personal conduct policy, resulting in a fine and a suspension.

The NFL announced on Friday that York had already served half of his suspension after missing the first three games of the 49ers' regular season.

"Those three missed games are counted toward his suspension, and he may return on Tuesday, October 20," the league confirmed when announcing his suspension.

York takes "full responsibility"

York, 46, stated that he took "full responsibility" for his actions.

"To my family, to the players, coaches, and employees of the San Francisco 49ers, to our fans and partners, I am deeply sorry," York said.

"This was an inexcusable mistake and I take full responsibility. What I did does not reflect my values or the man I strive to be for my family."

York is the majority owner and CEO of the 49ers, and he is also a co-owner of Leeds United, a team in the English Premier League, and the Rangers, one of Scotland's most prominent clubs.
