California: Massive fire reported at Chevron refinery in El Segundo

Authorities reported that a massive fire was reported at the Chevron refinery in El Segundo, California. Witnesses detailed that they felt a large explosion occur around 9:30 p.m., eminating orange flames and plumes of smoke. Images of the event were posted on social networks.

Meanwhile, the mayor of El Segundo, Chris Pimentel, highlighted that the cause of the fire is yet to be clarified. In addition, he explained that the fire did not spread beyond the refinery facilities and that all personnel were accounted for.

For its part, the Office of Gavin Newsom assured that the governor was informed of the incident and that the state is coordinating efforts with local and federal agencies.

"Our office is coordinating in real time with local and state agencies to protect the surrounding community and ensure public safety," Newsom's office highlighted in a brief statement.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass noted that "LAFD stands at the ready to assist with any mutual aid request. There is no known impact to LAX at this time".
