Florida on Tuesday executed Kayle Bates, sentenced to death for the 1982 murder of a 24-year-old woman. The 67-year-old man was given the lethal injection just after 6 p.m. local time at a north Florida prison.

He received the maximum sentence in 1983 for killing Renee White, an insurance company employee whom he kidnapped on her way home from lunch. Bates took her into a forest, where he stabbed her to death after beating and attempting to rape her.

Florida has carried out 10 executions this year, the highest number nationwide, according to AFP. Twenty-eight executions have been carried out in the United States in 2025, the highest number since 2015, when 28 inmates were also given the death penalty.

Twenty-three of this year's executions have been carried out by lethal injection, two by firing squad and three by nitrogen hypoxia, which involves pumping that gas into a face mask, causing the prisoner to suffocate.

The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 states, while three others (California, Oregon and Pennsylvania) have moratoriums in place.
