Economist and political analyst Daniel Lacalle stated that, despite the recent rise in inflation due to rising energy costs amid the conflict with Iran, the U.S. economy remains in a favorable position compared to other developed economies. During an interview with "Voz News," he explained that the rise is concentrated mainly in gasoline and diesel, while other components remain stable. "There is no inflationary pressure in the economy that is, shall we say, domestic," he stated. Although he acknowledged that the increase affects families, he emphasized that inflation in the United States is lower than in Spain, where it stands at 4.9%, and that fuel remains cheaper than in the European Union.
Lacalle also warned that another interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve could harm families and businesses without solving the problem of rising energy costs. "Raising interest rates won't increase oil production or the number of barrels of oil on the market, much less create more refineries or refine more diesel," he noted. For this reason, he considered that another rate hike would be "a very serious mistake," as it would harm the real economy without reducing oil prices.
In assessing the Trump administration's performance, Lacalle defended Republican policies and highlighted the country's economic growth. "The United States is the only major developed economy that is truly growing," he said, citing International Monetary Fund estimates pointing to growth above 2.1%, compared to stagnation in countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Italy, France and Germany. He also highlighted tax cuts and deregulation: "Americans' net real wages are maintaining their purchasing power despite inflation," he stated.
The economist questioned Democratic proposals to reduce the cost of living and asserted that prices for gasoline, diesel, electricity and housing are higher in states governed by that party. He cited California as an example and stated that gasoline prices there are high "due to political decisions." He also noted that during the Biden administration, average prices rose by more than 25%, while housing and food prices increased by more than 50%. "The Democrats have never lowered prices. The Democrats are inflationists," he declared.
Regarding the war with Iran, Lacalle stated that the rise in energy costs is not the direct responsibility of the Trump administration and pointed out that the conflict is linked to the progress of Iran's nuclear program. "The war with Iran is happening because Iran was allowed to reach a point where it was on the verge of having six nuclear bombs," he asserted. In that context, he argued that economic outcomes must be evaluated by considering both external factors and the decisions of each administration.
Lacalle also criticized the proposal by Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Michigan, to guarantee Medicare for all. He warned that greater government intervention could lead to "much higher taxes" and "lower-quality health care." Regarding Trump's promise to distribute $5,000 checks funded by tariff revenue and government savings, he recommended opting for a tax cut instead. "The best way to put that debate to rest is to say, 'Implement a significant tax cut for all middle- and low-income earners and for the people who are contributing the most,'" he concluded.
