Former naval intelligence director and political analyst Jesús Romero warned that the federal investigation into Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar could have serious implications if suspicions of immigration fraud are confirmed. In an interview with Voz News, Romero noted that a raid by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents at the lawmaker's Washington residence may point to an immigration-related investigation. "It immediately struck me that this is a case directly related to immigration," he explained.
Romero maintained that the search warrant required investigators to present a sworn affidavit to a federal judge with evidence of possible criminal activity. "We're talking about an American citizen who is the subject of a criminal investigation," he stated, explaining that the agents had to present their suspicions to a magistrate to obtain judicial authorization. However, he emphasized that the allegations have not yet been substantiated.
The investigation is reportedly related to allegations of immigration fraud linked both to Omar's entry into the United States and to an alleged marriage to her brother to help him obtain U.S. citizenship. Romero said these allegations have circulated for years and warned that, if fraud in the naturalization process is proven, the congresswoman could face legal consequences, including the possible loss of citizenship. However, he clarified that the allegations have not yet been proven.
The analyst also noted that the raid took place at Omar's Washington residence, not at her property in Minnesota, a state under scrutiny for alleged public-funds fraud. "It's very possible that federal agents were looking for something very specific inside her residence in Washington, D.C.," he noted. In his view, this detail could indicate that the operation is specifically focused on the immigration investigation involving the lawmaker and her family members.
When asked about Omar's statements regarding her commitment to the Somali community, Romero noted that the most politically relevant aspect is the congresswoman's relationship with that community in Minnesota, where she has a voter base. "There is a significant amount of fraud committed regarding immigration within this Somali sector, which she relies on for votes in Congress," he stated. However, those statements do not prove that Omar committed fraud or that her political ties connect to the federal investigation.
Elsewhere in the interview, Romero criticized Democrats who have alleged a possible political motive behind the investigation and urged them to exercise caution before backing the congresswoman without knowing the results. "Democrats should be careful about throwing their full weight behind this representative," he warned. He added that if the allegations proved true, the case would not only deal a blow to the Democratic Party but also expose vulnerabilities in the U.S. political system.
