Kimberly Guilfoyle submitted her resignation as U.S. ambassador to Greece on Tuesday after being implicated in an alleged corruption case.
In a statement posted on X, Guilfoyle expressed her gratitude for having been able to serve in the position while maintaining her innocence.
"These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity. I have dedicated my professional life to fighting for justice, standing up for what is right, and defending the values that make America exceptional. I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service," she told.
Guilfoyle's decision came after President Donald Trump asked her to resign due to alleged recordings released by the press in which she appears to ask a wealthy Republican donor for money to pay off debts.
"I didn't like what I read," Trump said before traveling to Alaska, referring to press reports about the now-former ambassador to Greece.
In addition, shortly before Guilfoyle resigned, White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed that the Trump administration asked her to resign.
A few days ago, the Department of State launched an investigation into Guilfoyle following a report alleging that the diplomat asked a Trump donor for $100,000 to pay off her credit card in exchange for access to the White House.
