New York's socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, confirmed on Wednesday that he had finally obtained his federal security clearance, nearly nine months after taking office. "I now have my security clearance," the Democratic leader said during a press conference held on Wednesday. The clearance was granted by the federal government following a high-profile meeting between Mamdani and President Donald Trump at Gracie Mansion during the United Nations General Assembly.

With the new clearance, Mamdani can access classified documents. Before receiving the clearance, a spokesperson for the mayor noted that Mamdani relied on briefings from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to receive information related to security matters. Despite this, many have expressed concern about Mamdani's potential access to such documents, given his radical views and ties to extremist figures.

Until now, senior officials in his administration who already held the necessary clearances — including his chief legal counsel, Ramzi Kassem — were able to attend these briefings, while the mayor himself could not, according to Politico. According to several reports, Mamdani requested clearance shortly after taking office in January, though it was not immediately clear when the Trump administration granted it.

The authorization comes a day after Staten Island Judge Wayne Ozzi ordered New York City to modify the way Mamdani's administration is implementing its surcharge on certain high-value second homes, finding that the city's Department of Finance failed to provide affected property owners with adequate due process and even mishandled the process used to determine which properties would be subject to the surcharge. "No crime is involved here; the property owners are being substantially harmed and unnecessarily penalized by the way the DOF is implementing the tax law," Ozzi wrote.
