White House begins sending $500 ObamaCare checks for excess user fees

The White House began mailing $500 refund checks on Wednesday to nearly 1 million Americans the Trump administration says were overcharged for their ObamaCare insurance.
The Treasury Department checks will go out to more than 950,000 Americans across 30 states who use healthcare.gov, the federal health insurance marketplace, the Hill reported.
"For years, the Biden administration overcharged you to fund the operation of HealthCare.gov. That money belongs to hard-working Americans, not the Government, and now I’m returning it to you!” President Trump wrote in a letter that will be sent with the checks.
Approximately 19.2 million people enrolled in Affordable Care Act coverage, and only a fraction of them are eligible for the checks, most of whom live in Florida and Texas.
Most of the eligible recipients are those who earn above 400% of the federal poverty level, which is $64,000 for a single person and $132,000 for a family of four.
The rebates come from what the White House describes as a $500 million fund of excess user fees, which are paid by insurance companies to the federal government to cover services, such as technology support, call center operations and outreach efforts to enroll more Americans in ObamaCare.
