The senators overwhelmingly rejected (24-6) the attorney general's claim to end the trial because the alleged crimes predate his last re-election.
The future of the Texas attorney general, accused of bribery, abuse of power and obstruction of justice, is being decided in the state Senate.
While awaiting a Senate vote, the Republican official was immediately removed from office. He is accused of bribery and abuse of authority.
