At least 27 Americans have been killed by the Hamas terrorist group since it began carrying out attacks against Israel. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed the figure Thursday during a White House briefing.

"Tragically, the number of innocent lives claimed by Hamas's heinous attacks continues to rise ... We join families in Israel, the United States and around the world in mourning their immeasurable loss," Blinken said in an appearance after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Aside from those killed, at least 17 Americans are missing or have been taken hostage by Hamas, according to White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. He pointed out, in a press conference held Wednesday, that the number of missing people could increase:

We know that a number of those Americans are being held hostage right now, but I think we all need to steel ourselves for the very distinct possibility that these numbers will keep increasing, and that we may in fact, find out that more Americans are part of the hostage pool.
