Since protests erupted on 28 December 2025 against economic hardship and state repression, security forces have responded with mass arrests and deadly crackdowns, including one of the deadliest episodes on 8–9 January 2026. Figures vary widely due to restricted information: the Iranian government reported about 3,100 deaths, independent rights groups have confirmed over 5,000, and some local health-care data suggest totals could be tens of thousands — with unverified hospital figures exceeding 30,000 killed during those two days alone.
