The U.S. men's national team (USMNT) secured its third consecutive victory on Saturday after defeating Mexico decisively 3-0 in a friendly match played at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
After hosting the 2026 World Cup, along with Canada, a little over two months ago, the two teams met for this matchup. On this occasion, Mauricio Pochettino was finally able to defeat Mexico as the USMNT's head coach. The other two times he had faced the neighboring country, he had been defeated.
"You feel the pressure when the Mexican national team plays; the fans demand a lot from the players and the coaching staff as well, but our team showed emotional control," Pochettino summarized at a press conference.
For his part, Rafael Márquez suffered his first loss as Mexico's head coach, a position he assumed following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.
"It hurts to lose, especially this way, because those were gifts from the opponent rather than their own merits. These are very crude mistakes, but correctable ones; I'll focus on the good things we did up until the first goal: we were in the opponent's half, we had good positioning, and a couple of scoring chances, without them creating any danger for us," Márquez said after the game.
Julian Hall scored in the 28th minute, Cavan Sullivan in the 62nd and Malik Tillman in the 84th.
