William Byron wins the Daytona 500
The driver broke a nine-year losing streak for Hendrick Motorsports.
William Byron ended a nine-year losing streak for Hendrick Motorsports in the Daytona 500 with his victory Monday. The big race was delayed one day due to rain.
It is Hendrick Motorsports' ninth victory in the Daytona 500, tying the company with Petty Enterprises.
"I can’t believe it. I wish my dad was here. He’s sick, but this is for him, man. We’ve been through so much," Byron said upon winning the race in statements collected by the National Stock Car Racing Association (NASCAR).
The association also detailed that "How much Byron has yet to prove is debatable. He won a series-best six races last year, qualified for the Championship 4 and finished third in the final standings."
