The aerospace company SpaceX, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, plans to build a large port complex on the coast of Louisiana, which will include cargo docks, heavy-haul roads, and extensive industrial facilities designed to facilitate the movement of goods.
According to an investigation by The Center Square, published by Just the News, the project will be located in Vermilion Parish, next to the Freshwater Bayou, and will connect the coastal facilities to the state's inland waterways.
Preliminary documents call for the construction of approximately 1,067 meters of docks, roughly 25 kilometers of roads for heavy-haul transportation , and more than 1.6 kilometers of elevated railways.
They also include extensive industrial areas for storage and cargo handling, as well as dredging work that will allow access for large vessels.
A Private investment with commercial potential
According to state records cited by The Center Square, the complex will be financed with private capital and designed to accommodate vessels not exclusively owned by SpaceX.
This opens up the possibility for the facilities to function as a logistics hub for other commercial operations, in addition to the aerospace company's activities.
The project would also allow for the transfer of large equipment and cargo between ships, barges, and trucks, circumventing some of the limitations of the existing transportation infrastructure.
The proposal must still navigate the relevant regulatory processes, including those related to its impact on coastal wetlands.
For their part, representatives from various state agencies and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers declined to provide additional details about the project, according to The Center Square.
SpaceX's investments in logistics infrastructure
Although the submitted documentation describes port and transportation facilities, it does not specify what goods will pass through the complex nor does it expressly contemplate the construction of launch pads in this application.
