President Donald Trump wants one of his golf resorts in Florida to serve as a presidential residence, similar to Camp David, the White House told AFP on Wednesday.
As an administration official explained to the news agency, the government requested a study on the possibility of converting the Trump International Golf Club in Palm Beach into a presidential retreat that could also be used by future presidents to hold important meetings.
The official highlighted the complex's proximity to the airport, its security features, and the fact that it is not surrounded by large buildings or residential areas as advantages.
The White House did not specify whether the Trump family would receive any financial compensation for the government's use of the property or whether there is a possibility that the administration might eventually acquire it.
Trump's properties: Venues for official meetings
Since his return to the White House, Trump has used several of his properties for activities related to his presidential agenda.
Last year, the president signed a trade agreement with the European Union during a meeting held at one of his properties in Scotland, while another Trump family resort in Miami is slated to host the upcoming G20 summit in December, according to the agency.
Trump also often spends many weekends at his Florida residence and has made less frequent use of Camp David, the traditional presidential retreat located in Maryland.
Camp David has been used for decades by U.S. presidents for private meetings and diplomatic negotiations. Among other historic meetings, the negotiations that led to the 1978 Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel—mediated by the United States—were held there.
