Mexico is in mourning. Former Mexican boxer and politician Jorge Kahwagi has died at age 58 after suffering a stroke, according to his family.

Kahwagi lost his father, businessman Jorge Kahwagi Gastine, just six months ago.

During his time in college, Kahwagi boxed as an amateur. He later made the leap to the professional ranks, winning all 11 of his fights by knockout.

As for his political career, in 2001 he joined the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico, a progressive party with which he remained until 2006. During that period, he served as a representative in the Congress of the Union.

Later, his political views became more moderate, and he joined the ranks of Nueva Alianza, a party positioned in the center of the political spectrum. He represented the party in Congress from 2009 to 2012.

From 2019 until his death, Kahwagi was registered as an independent.
