Volkswagen Group recalls over 2.8 million vehicles worldwide due to risk of corrosion in steering system

Volkswagen recalled more than 2.8 million VW and Audi vehicles worldwide due to a risk of "screw breakage" in the steering system, the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) reported Friday in a statement.
The problem could cause "screw breakage," which could "lead to steering failure," the KBA stated.
Specifically, the recall affects 2.16 million VW vehicles and 700,000 Audi vehicles. Of these, one-third are in Germany.
In the case of VW, the five models—Golf, Golf Variant, Tiguan, Touran and Caddy—were manufactured between 2013 and 2024. As for Audi, the recall involves Q3 models manufactured from 2017 to 2024.
"We are recalling the affected vehicles as a precautionary measure; there have been no reports of personal injury," a spokesperson for the group told AFP, noting that "corrosion on the screw" had been detected.
According to the spokesperson, the danger "is not serious enough to require the vehicle to be taken off the road" immediately, and he said that owners can drive the vehicle to the dealership, "as is." There, they will be provided with new screws that are more resistant to corrosion, he explained.
This marks another setback for Europe's leading automaker, which in early September reached an agreement with unions to cut up to 100,000 jobs by 2030.
