Former New York City Councilman Dan Halloran was arrested after authorities found thousands of child pornography videos on his mobile device. The former official was previously in prison for receiving bribes to rig a local election.
The arrest of Halloran, a former Republican Party member, took place Saturday at Miami International Airport in Florida, where he was making a stopover after departing from Cuba.
He was transferred to the main prison in Broward County, Fla., charged with two counts related to possession of child pornography, according to law enforcement officials in a complaint filed in the Southern District of Florida.
Authorities found 1,362 videos and images of child pornography and sexual assaults of minors on his cell phone, some of them of children who had not even reached puberty.
The former Republican councilman, who acquired the files through the messaging platform Telegram, paid between $50 and $500 for each of the videos or images.
Halloran has a criminal record. In 2015, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for participating in a bribery and electoral fraud scheme. According to a report by The New York Post, he remained behind bars for five years, from 2014 to 2019.
