The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said Friday that it is investigating a recent malicious cyber attack on its own computer network.

A spokesperson for the agency told Fox News that the incident was an isolated incident that has been contained, but requires further investigation and could not provide more details at this time.

However, two FBI officials who were aware of the matter told CNN that the attack involved a computer system used by the agency to investigate child sexual abuse materials.

The two sources said the malicious activity involved the federal agency's New York Field Office, which is one of the largest and most high-profile in the country.

Other hacks

This attack would be the latest in a series of hacking incidents the government has been dealing with over the last decade.

In late 2021 someone used the FBI's legitimate email address to communicate with both state and local law enforcement. At the time the agency said it managed to fix the software vulnerability.

A widespread cyber espionage operation by hackers linked to Russian intelligence was also uncovered in 2020, affecting federal networks.

In 2015 the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) was hacked and federal employee records were stolen. This attack was attributed to Chinese hackers.
