Zohran Mamdani, the 33-year-old socialist candidate who defeated Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary for New York mayor, revealed that he has spoken on the phone with Democratic former President Barack Obama “a number of times" since his victory in New York City.

The first call occurred shortly after the primary, where they discussed Mamdani's campaign and the importance of instilling hope in politics.

"It was an honor having a conversation", Mamdani said during an event in the Bronx, part of his five-day tour against President Donald Trump. The socialist claimed that Obama's reflections have been valuable to his campaign ahead of the general election.

However, Mamdani avoided speculating on a possible endorsement from the former president, leaving the decision in Obama's hands.

NYC poll

Democrats are in the lead in the Siena College poll for mayor and governor of New York. Although dropping in the polls, Governor Kathy Hochul still leads her race to retake office by 14 points, while Councilman Zohran Mamdani is also in the lead by 19 points.

The Siena poll confirms Councilman Mamdani’s leading position in the race for New York City Mayor, with the election set for November 4. Among the 39% of registered voters who participated, 44% expressed support for the socialist candidate.

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani, came in second with 25% support. He’s followed by Republican Curtis Sliwa with 12% and Mayor Eric Adams, also running as an independent with 7%.
