Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel commented during an event that Republican electors who certified a victory for Donald Trump in 2020 were "brainwashed."

According to CNN, which had access to the recording, Nessel made the comment during a virtual conference organized by the Protectors of Equality in Government association, a left-leaning group. The topic of the conference revolved around the case of alleged electoral interference committed by Donald Trump and his team in 2020.

Nessel's comments come two months after the Democratic attorney general filed charges against 16 qualified Republican electors who, in 2020, signed certificates giving victory to Donald Trump.

"The problem is, these are people who have been brainwashed," Nessel said during the event, according to the CNN recording. “How do you flip someone who concedes that they did everything that they’re accused of doing, but what they say is, ‘we believe that we were in the right. We think that Donald Trump is the real winner of the election’ … They really legit believe that. They genuinely believe it. Somebody can’t even plead guilty if they wanted to, because they can’t admit that what they did violated the law, because they still think they’re right.” Nessel continued during the conference.

The group allegedly met on Dec. 14, 2020 and signed multiple certificates declaring themselves qualified electors for Trump. These false documents were then transmitted to the Senate and the National Archives. The public prosecution filed eight charges against these 16 people, including forgery of documents, punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
