FBI confirms Musk revelations and says communication with Twitter is normal
The spokesman wanted to normalize ties between the social network and the federal agency.
A spokesman for the FBI decided to come to the agency's defense after Elon Musk released a new installment of the controversial Twitter Files focusing on ties between the bureau and Twitter.
As reported by Fox News Digital the unidentified agent is said to have justified the posts he made on the social network between Twitter’s previous administration the agency. He assured that the relationship was only to guarantee national security, focusing on certain issues.
According to the spokesperson, this type of communication between the FBI and Twitter are not only normal but also frequent.
"The FBI regularly engages with private sector entities to provide specific information on the subversive, undeclared, covert or criminal activities of identified foreign malign influence actors," he told the aforementioned media outlet.
He also implied that the FBI was not the final decision maker, so if the social network had made a decision against a user, it would have been based on Twitter's policies or the decision of its employees.
"Industry entities make decisions independently about what action, if any, to take on their platforms and for their customers after they have been notified by the FBI," the agent said.
It is worth noting that in the last installment of the Twitter Files, journalist Matt Taibbi even shared emails that showed that the FBI shared a long list of users who allegedly violated the terms of service, requesting their review.
Twitter responded to this with a number of actions that the company took against the accounts that the federal agency sent.
In fact, in Taibbi’s final post, he reflected on how "entangled" the collaboration between state agencies and private contractors is.
