British actor Henry Cavill will no longer play Superman. Two months after announcing the actor's long-awaited return as the Man of Steel, James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, confirmed the news in a Twitter thread in which he spoke about the company's upcoming projects:

The second tweet, in which Gunn confirmed Cavill's departure, was the cause of disappointment for many DC fans.

However, Gunn did not close the door on a potential return for the British actor and assured that the company still wanted to include Cavill in future projects:

Gunn and Safran reinvent the DC universe

Cavill, who recently resigned from his role as Gerald of Rivia in the TV series The Witcher, was also upset after learning of his dismissal. However, as he explained on Instagram, he respected the decision made by the new bosses at DC Studios:

The news comes amidst the ongoing crisis at DC Studios that led to the appointment of Peter Safran and James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3) as chairmen. They decided to reboot the universe and end several projects that were already confirmed, among them Wonder Woman 3.

The movie starring Gal Gadot was on track to be produced until a few weeks ago, when rumors of massive project cancellations at the company began, which are slowly being confirmed.

Patty Jenkins, director of Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984, was the one who assured that Wonder Woman 3 will ultimately not see the big screen due to the changes spearheaded by Safran and Gunn:

The film company's reboot also put other projects in jeopardy, such as Aquaman 3, The Flash and Black Adam 2, whose future is still up in the air.
