In the face of the ongoing debate in the United States about sexual identity, most Americans are clear about their position. According to a survey conducted by the consulting firm Rasmussen Reports, more than seven out of 10 (71%) respondents say that there are only two genders: male and female. Only 23% disagreed, compared to 6% who had no opinion.
By ideology, a large majority of Republicans (83%) support this statement. Nearly seven in 10 Democrats (67%) also support it, with 47% who "strongly agree" and 53% who "somewhat agree."
Another question asked by Rasmussen Reports was whether schools and teachers should teach students about sexual identity: six out of 10 Americans (60%) are opposed. That "no" was supported by 75% of Republicans and 44% of Democrats. Twenty-six percent support it, and 14% preferred not to answer.
Prohibiting gender reassignment treatments for minors
More than half of respondents (59%), including 70% of Republicans and 54% of Democrats, reject gender-altering hormone treatments for minors.
Questions were also asked about surgeries: 62% of Americans believe they should be illegal, 56% of Democrats and 73% of Republicans.
