Video: Shark kills swimmer in the Red Sea

The victim was a Russian citizen born in 1999 who resided in Egypt, according to official sources.

A beach-goer filmed a shark attacking a swimmer just off the shore of the Red Sea near a resort in Hurghada, Egypt. The video quickly circulated on social media, where it was reported that the victim was a Russian man.

Viktor Voropayev, consul general of Russia, reported hours later in statements picked up by TASS that a Russian citizen had died from a shark attack. The official also assured that the victim was born in 1999, and that the incident happened around 3 p.m. local time.

However, the diplomat denied that the victim was a tourist. He claimed instead, that he was a permanent resident of Egypt. He also asked Russian citizens to respect local authorities' regulations and coast guard warnings.

Yasmine Fouad, Egypt's environment minister, confirmed that the man had died, according to The Guardian. The same source also reported that the authorities closed the perimeter and announced that it would remain so until next Sunday.
