Uruguay crashes against South Korea

The first match of Group H ended in a scoreless draw. Uruguay, a.k.a. 'The Celeste' had two clear chances that ended up hitting the post.

Uruguay failed to get a win against an underdog South Korean side in its debut at the World Cup in Qatar. The teams played evenly for the better part of the match, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

"The Celeste" started as favorites, although South Korea entered the match with more energy and momentum, hardly giving up the ball. Both teams enjoyed clear chances. The first came in the 34th minute, when South Korean striker Ui-Jo Hwang had a chance to put his team ahead, but he sent his shot over the goal. Seconds before the end of the first half, Uruguayan defender Diego Godín headed the ball against the post off a corner kick.

After the start of the second half, the game gradually reached a stale mate. Real Madrid's Fede Valverde emerged after a quiet first half and ended up being the team's most outstanding player. The midfielder created another great chance for Uruguay, hitting the post again with a strong shot from outside the area. Had he scored, it would have been one of the goals of this tournament so far. Minutes earlier, striker Darwin Núñez gave the South Koreans a scare with another shot that went just wide.

With this draw, Uruguay is tied with South Korea atop Group H, awaiting the result of the match between Portugal and Ghana.
