Ukrainian interior minister and top brass killed in helicopter crash in Kiev

The aircraft crashed into a kindergarten with children and teachers inside. At least 16 people are dead.

Denys Monastyrsky, Ukraine’s minister of internal affairs, died Wednesday morning when the helicopter he was traveling in crashed into a kindergarten near Kiev. The news was announced by the head of the National Police of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko.

This morning, Jan. 18, a State Emergency Service helicopter crashed in Brovary. The leadership of the Ministry of Interior died as a result of the plane crash. So far, 16 people are known dead, including two children. Of these, nine were on board the helicopter. 22 victims are hospitalized, including 10 children.

The accident took place in the city of Brovary, when the helicopter plummeted down and landed on a kindergarten. New victims could be added to the 16 already reported dead in the coming hours. Along with the minister, his First Deputy Yevgeniy Yenin and secretary of the ministry were also among victims. Twenty-two victims are hospitalized, including 10 children.
