Polls give Biden 37% approval rating, his worst showing since the start of his term in office

The Gallup poll showed just 37% approval, the president's worst figure since the start of his term.

Biden ends April with his worst rating in 19 months. The Gallup consulting firm estimated Biden's voter approval rating at 37 percentage points. The news from the consulting firm comes just days after the president officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.

Since Biden began his term in January 2021, with a 57% approval rating, the rate has not stopped falling. It crossed the 40% threshold in July 2022, when it fell to 38%. That month was the last low until this April. In the preceding months, the Democratic president managed to stay at around 40%. The result for April corresponds to the days between the 3rd and 25th of that month. In February and March, the valuation was 42% and 40%, respectively.

Averaged over 19 months in office, Biden scores 39.7%, the worst of the last eleven U.S. presidents, second only to Ronald Reagan, who had a rating of 38.8%. Donald Trump achieved a 41.6% approval rating during the same time in office that Biden is now in office, and Obama achieved 46.7%.

According to Gallup, the latest polls lower Biden's approval rating due to poor results among voters who do not identify with either party. Approval of Biden's term was 83% among Democrats, 31% for independents and 4% for Republicans. Since February, the approval rating of non-affiliates has dropped nine points. According to Gallup, Biden's chances of reaching his second term will depend on his ability to win over these independent voters.

The consulting firm manages to establish a relationship between the assessment of the Biden Administration and voters' perception of the economic situation. From February to April 2023, Americans' assessment of the economy fell by eight points. From -36 to -44. The worst data for citizen evaluation of the economy was in June 2022, with -58 points.

Slump in three key states

According to Morning Consult, things are getting complicated for the Democratic candidate in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. According to the latest polls of this firm, Joe Biden's popularity in these three states declines in the month of April. 55% of Wisconsin voters disapprove of the Biden Administration's stewardship. The same figure is worse in Pennsylvania, 56%, the same as in Michigan.

As for the final outcome of the elections, the polls are not yet able to give reliable perspectives. Some polls give a close result and vary depending on Biden's Republican challenger in 2024. According to Emerson College, Biden would beat Donald Trump 43% to 41%, with 6% of voters undecided. If he were to face DeSantis, the victory would be wider, with 43% vs. 37% and 10% undecided.
