Mitch McConnell released from hospital after fall

The Senate Minority Leader was treated for a concussion and will continue to recover in a rehabilitation center.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was released from the hospital Monday after being treated for a concussion following a fall during a private dinner at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington D.C. last Wednesday.

McConnell will continue to recover in a rehabilitation center, his spokesman, David Popp, said in a statement:

At the advice of his physician, the next step will be a period of physical therapy at an inpatient rehabilitation center before he returns home.

McConnell's office stated that doctors discovered over the weekend that the senator had also suffered a "minor rib fracture." He is currently being treated for this injury.

McConnell, 81, was first elected senator in 1984. He was Senate Majority Leader from 2015 to 2021 and has been Senate Minority Leader ever since. For the time being, he has not given further details on how long he will be away from legislative activity or how his absence will affect Congress.

The Senate returns to Washington Tuesday night after the weekend break and is scheduled to be in session for the remainder of the month.
