Marco Rubio proposes TikTok ban

The Republican senator from Florida is introducing bipartisan legislation to ban the app that puts American citizens' data in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio on Tuesday announced bipartisan legislation to ban TikTok in the United States, citing national security concerns over indications that the app, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, could be used to spy on citizens.

The legislation introduced in the Senate is entitled "Averting the National Threat of Internet Surveillance, Oppressive Censorship and Influence, and Algorithmic Learning by the Chinese Communist Party Act (ANTI-SOCIAL CCP Act)." It would ban an all transactions from any social network or company headquartered in (or under the influence of) China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela.

Marco Rubio also recalled that his party colleague, Wisconsin Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher, and Illinois Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi, introduced joint legislation in the House of Representatives. Rubio's bill adds to the wave of states banning the Chinese app on government devices. Rubio emphasizes that:

TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, is required by Chinese law to make the app's data available to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

The Florida senator pointed out that TikTok is not just a social video network, but "an app that is collecting data on tens of millions of American children and adults every day."

We know it is used to manipulate feeds and influence elections. We know that it answers to the People's Republic of China. There is no more time to waste in pointless negotiations with a CCP puppet company. Time to ban Beijing-controlled TikTok for good.
