Jimmy Kimmel to host the 2023 Oscars

The comedian will host the ceremony organized by the Academy for the third time, taking back his roll as host for the first time in four years.

Jimmy Kimmel will host the 2023 Oscars ceremony. The 95th edition, which will take place on March 12 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, will once again feature the comedian as host of the event.

As the Academy mentions in its post, this is not Kimmel's first time hosting. He also hosted the ceremony at the 89th and 90th editions (held in 2017 and 2018, respectively). In fact, the 2017 gala is one of the most remembered. That was the year that La La Land was mistakenly announced as Best Picture when, in fact, the Oscar was intended for the film Moonlight.

Just minutes after the Academy officially named him host of the 95th Oscars, Kimmel issued the following statement:

Being invited to host the Oscars for a third time is either a great honor or a trap. Either way, I am grateful to the academy for asking me so quickly after everyone good said no.

The Academy would like to reclaim the host's role

Academy members were quick to echo the news. After being without an official host of the ceremony since 2019, the Academy made it clear that they wanted to bring Kimmel back to the ceremony. Academy CEO Bill Kramer said in an interview back in August with The Hollywood Reporter:

We definitely want a host. A host is very important to us, we are committed to having a host on the show this year and we are already looking at some key partners on that.

Kimmel has a high approval rating. Oscars producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirsher made a brief statement, in which they said they were thrilled to have Kimmel back:

We’re super thrilled to have Jimmy score his hat trick on this global stage. We know he will be funny and ready for anything!

The sentiment was also shared by Academy President Janet Young and the aforementioned Academy CEO Bill Kramer, Deadline reports:

Jimmy is the perfect host to help us recognize the incredible artists and films of our 95th Oscars. His love of movies, live TV expertise, and ability to connect with our global audiences will create an unforgettable experience for our millions of viewers worldwide.
