Encounters with immigrants at the border reached 211,401 during April 2023, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This represents an increase of 10% over the March figures, although those are 12% lower than in the same month last year. In addition, some 60,000 undocumented immigrants managed to enter the country by evading Border Patrol agents.
Apprehensions between ports of entry also increased over the previous month, reaching 182,114. In the monthly update, CBP stresses that the increase in encounters in April over those in March is "typical."
Most of the encounters were processed under Title 8
One piece of data that authorities want to highlight, especially to contrast with the data from the end of Title 42 (May 11), is the number of unique encounters with immigrants. According to CBP officials, one of the negative aspects of the recently expired order was that it encouraged reattempts to gain access by the same individuals. Under the application of Title 8, these undocumented immigrants would be banned from entering the country for five years and would face harsher consequences.
During April, the number of repeat encounters was 48,243 (23%), while 139,369 (66%) were unique. The update shows that 74,027 encounters (35%) were processed for expulsion under Title 42. However, the majority(137,374) were resolved with the application of Title 8.
The number of arrests of family units increased by 28% compared to March, while the number of arrests of single individuals increased by 5%. Meanwhile, the arrival of unaccompanied minors decreased by 7%.
