A group of Hispanic House Republicans have called for the closure of the southern border. The legislators stated that one of the Biden Administration's priorities should be to "bring order," in reference to the country's border crisis. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) said in a press conference:
We do not want an open border because it does not suit our people. We can close the border, bring order and then deal with the immigration issue.
Mario Diaz-Balart insisted that "democracy requires negotiation." He noted that the Hispanic voice will gain strength in Congress and that conservative policies will be a real alternative to Democratic ones. He also alluded that the days of "the dictatorship" of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "are over."
"Hispanic wants to bring order to the border"
The last mid-term elections gave the House leadership to the Republicans, among them there are 18 legislators of Hispanic origin, the largest number ever to date. The GOP has as one of its main objectives, a plan to establish control over the management of the border with Mexico to - among other reasons - deal with the illegal trafficking of immigrants and drugs, which in its opinion is rampant. Salazar added:
We have to seal it and bring people back in a legal way. If that doesn't happen, it's because the Democrats aren't helping us. It is important for everyone to know that the Hispanic wants to bring order to the border.
In this new legislature, Hispanic Republicans say they will bring "new momentum and encouragement" and that they are united in seeking solutions to the major concerns of citizens. They added that there are no ethnic or racial distinctions when it comes to problems that affect the entire population of the country. Arizona Representative Juan Ciscomani, went on to say:
There are no Hispanic themes. There are issues that affect everyone. We are all fruits of the American dream and we are all here to defend it.
Diaz-Balart also referred to the economic crisis facing the nation and said that the group will work "to make sure that the United States continues to be the best country in the world, that the border is secure and that inflation is reduced." She also said:
In an era where buying a dozen eggs has become a luxury, where we have a border crisis and record inflation, it is great to see that Hispanics in our country have opened their eyes to the damage that the socialist policies of the left have caused in this great country.
