Hispanics in the running for Golden Globes 2023

The ceremony will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Among the nominees are Guillermo del Toro, Jenna Ortega and Ana de Armas.

Awards season is about to begin. The Golden Globes will give out the first round of prizes for the series and films that were enjoyed last year.

The 80th edition of the Golden Globes will take place Tuesday, Jan. 10, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California. The gala, organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, will honor the best of films and shows in 2022. The Hispanic world will have a strong presence thanks to the following nominees:

'Argentina, 1985'

Only one Hispanic film received a nomination at the Golden Globes. Argentina, 1985 will compete for the Best Foreign Film award with India's RRR, Germany's All Quiet on the Western Front, Bulgaria's Close and South Korea's Decision to Leave.

Argentina, 1985 is a historical drama jointly produced by Argentina and the United States. The film, available on Prime Video follows the work of prosecutor Julio César Strassera and his team in the Trial of the Military Juntas, a case in which a civilian court tried the military commanders responsible for leading the Argentinian dictatorship between 1976 and 1983.

Guillermo del Toro

Guillermo del Toro is once again nominated for the Golden Globes after being absent since 2018. That year, the filmmaker managed to win two of the seven awards he was nominated for, Best Director and Best Soundtrack for the film The Shape of Water. Years earlier, in 2007, del Toro won, for the first time, a nomination in the Best Foreign Film category with Pan's Labyrinth.

This time, the director is once again nominated for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio the remake of Carlo Collodi's popular children's story that recently premiered on Netflix. Unlike Disney's adaptation from a few months ago, this new version was quite successful and has earned it three nominations at the Golden Globes: Best Soundtrack, Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.

Ana de Armas

Blonde (translated in Latin America as Rubia), the Marilyn Monroe biopic produced by Netflix, did not achieve the success or acclaim it expected, but it was enough for Ana de Armas to re-establish herself as an international star.

The Cuban-Spanish actress, who has spent half her life as an actor, is nominated for the Golden Globe in the category of Best Actress in a Dramatic Motion Picture for her portrayal of the legendary Marilyn Monroe.

This is Ana de Armas' second nomination at the Golden Globes. However, this will be the first time that the actress will be on stage as a presenter. She will work alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, Quentin Tarantino and Ana Gasteyer.

Diego Calva

Calva was one of Hollywood's breakout actors in 2022. Despite having already won Best Actor at the Havana Film Festival for I Promise You Anarchy (Te prometo anarquía), the Mexican actor earned his first nomination in the U.S. film industry for his role in Babylon.

In the film, which stars Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, he brings the role of Manny Torres to life. He is the assistant to Jack Conrad, the character played by Pitt, who endorsed him and his nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture. Not only did Pitt recognize Calva's potential as a performer, Margot Robbie also had numerous compliments for her Mexican co-star.

Anya Taylor-Joy

The actress, who boasts Argentinean roots, earned two Golden Globe nominations in 2021 for her performances in Emma and The Queen's Gambit. She also won the award for Best Actress in a Miniseries for the latter. She will be remembered for the outfit she wore to the gala: an emerald green Dior dress that stole the spotlight.

This year, the performer will face stiff competition for the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. She is up against Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris); Margot Robbie (Babylon); Emma Thompson (Good Luck to You Leo Grande); and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once).

Taylor-Joy is nominated for her role in the horror movie The Menu available on HBO Max. In the film she plays Margot. She, along with her partner Tyler (Nicholas Hault), travel to a private island in order to have dinner at a restaurant that offers a unique dining experience, loaded with meaning for its famous and mysterious chef, played by Ralph Fiennes. However, the diners soon realize the terrible truth that both the chef and his curious menu are hiding.

Diego Luna

Disney Plus took a chance with Andor and succeeded. The ratings cost a bit more, but Mexican Diego Luna's role as Cassian Andor stood out from the beginning, and the prequel to the Rogue One movie gradually gained a cult following and critical acclaim.

Luna is nominated for a Golden Globe in one of the most hotly contested television categories: Best Performance by an Actor in a Dramatic Television Series. He received news of his nomination just "after an intense day of shooting for season 2" of the series for which he is nominated:

This is the first nomination for the Mexican actor, and he will face other great actors of the big and small screen such as Jeff Bridges, Kevin Costner, Bob Odenkirk and Adam Scott, who are nominated for their roles in The Old Man, Yellowstone, Better Call Saul and Severance, respectively. If Diego Luna wins the Golden Globe, he will surely dedicate it to his father, set designer Alejandro Luna, who, as he said on Twitter, passed away a day after he was nominated.

Selena Gomez

The actress and singer, who is of Mexican heritage, has a lot at stake at this year's Golden Globes. She was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Television Series for her role in Only Murders in the Building. The series, which also stars Steve Martin and Martin Short earned a nomination for at Best Comedy or Musical Series of the year.

The Hulu show, which in its third season will feature actor Paul Rudd, follows the residents of a historic building who decide to investigate the strange murders occurring there while hosting a podcast. However, over time, they not only become famous for their podcast, but they themselves become suspects and must prove their innocence.

During the third season, Selena Gomez will not only participate as part of the cast of the series, but will also demonstrate her talent behind the scenes, participating in the visual projection of the new episodes.

Jenna Ortega

The young actress is also making her debut at this year's Golden Globes. She is nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Television Series alongside no less than Selena Gomez, Quinta Brunson, Kaley Cuoco and Jean Smart, who are up for the statuette for their roles in Only Murders in the Building, Abbott Elementary, The Flight Attendant and Hacks, respectively.

However, the oddsmakers have Ortega as the favorite. The actress, who is of Mexican descent, began her career in Jane The Virgin, also acting in You and Scream. She did not achieve mainstream success until signing on as the lead role in Wednesday, the Netflix series in which she plays the eldest daughter of The Addams Family.

Wednesday, Netflix's latest hit with a large Hispanic presence, could also earn the award for Best Musical or Comedy TV Series. However, the show will have to overcome Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Only Murders in the Building and Hacks.
