Golden Globes 2023: favorite series and movies to win the coveted award

The gala, to be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California, returns to the small screen on Tuesday after last year's boycott.

The Golden Globes are coming soon. There are only a few hours left to find out the first winners and discover which series and films are the favorites for the next big events such as the Critics' Choice Awards (January 15), the BAFTAs (February 19) or the Oscars (March 12).

The gala, to be held tonight at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California, returns to television after several scandals that resulted in the ceremony not being broadcast on the small screen last year. Organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Academy, it is one of the few awards that honors both big screen and small screen productions. And, as in the rest of the major ceremonies, it also has predictions about who will win. These are the favorites to win a Golden Globe in just a few hours:

Film categories

In film, the clear favorite to win the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Drama is The Fabelmans. However, the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick or the surprising Elvis could snatch the award at the last moment, as they are very popular among the voters of the Hollywood Foreign Press Academy.

Betting is more difficult for Best Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy, as the polls are starting with two favorites. The statuette could be won by either The Banshees of Inesherin, the film with the most nominations in this edition with eight, or Everything Everywhere All At Once, which is also another clear favorite with six nominations.

As for Best Director, things seem to be clear, and several media outlets are predicting Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans as the winner. The director, EW remembers, has gone more than 20 years without winning a Golden Globe. The last one was in 1999 for Saving Private Ryan. His rivals for the award are James Cameron, for Avatar: The Way of Water; The Daniels, for Everything Everywhere All At Once; Baz Luhrmann, for Elvis; and Martin McDonagh, for The Banshees of Inisherin.

All signs point to Elvis star Austin Butler to win the Golden Globefor Best Dramatic Actor. The same goes for Cate Blanchett. The actress has every chance of winning Best Dramatic Actress for her role in Tár.

The same is true for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. Both the New York Post, as well as EW and USA Today agree and predict that the winner will be Colin Farrell for his role in The Banshess of Inesherin. These same sources also agree in their predictions for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and give the Golden Globe to Michelle Yeoh for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

In Best Supporting Actress catagory, the bets are closer. Jamie Lee Curtis' s role for Everything Everywhere All At Once could be the winner, however, she must contend with the work done by Angela Bassett in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Kerry Condon in The Banshees of Inesherin.

Less hotly contested is the Best Supporting Actor category. All bets are on Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All at Once to win the statuette. However, according to EW, the award should go to Brendan Gleeson for his work in The Banshees of Inesherin.

Television categories

On the television side, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has a harder time deciding its winners. As Variety recalls, at these awards, the organization tends to honor new fiction. Following this approach, the Best Dramatic Fiction could be either
House of the Dragon
, from HBO, or Severance from Apple TV. Both are starting with an advantage and one of the two will be the winner against The Crown, Better Call Saul and Ozark.

For Best Comedy Series all bets are on Abbott Elementary, ABC's series. However, here the surprise could come from Hulu's fiction, Only Murders in the Building or even The Bear, from FX. It will be more difficult for, Wednesday and Hacks which, although they have a chance, do not seem likely to win the Golden Globe.

Despite the fact that the Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Fiction eludes it, The Crown could end the night with an award: Best Dramatic Actress. Imelda Staunton is one of the favorites to take home the award for her portrayal of England's Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix series. Although for that she must compete with Zendaya, who also has several options for her role in the HBO Max series, Euphoria.

In Best Dramatic Actor, the bets are also divided. On one hand, Bob Odenkirk could take home the Golden Globe for his role in Netflix's Better Call Saul. However, polls also have Jeff Bridges as the frontrunner, who could snatch the award from Odenkirk for his role in FX's The Old Man.

It's easier for the Hispanic Jenna Ortega who is the clear favorite for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. She would be the youngest performer to win a Golden Globe and she would do it with one of Netflix's latest hits, Wednesday, which was recently renewed for a second season. Other nominees include Selena Gomez for Only Murders in the Building and Kaley Cuoco for The Flight Attendant.

Best Actor in a Comedy Series is undoubtedly one of the most hotly contested categories at the Golden Globes. Leading the polls here is Bill Hader for his role in HBO's Barry. But the surprise could come from Jeremy Allen White, who is also a favorite in this category for his acclaimed role in FX's, The Bear.

The favorite to win the title of Best Supporting Actor in a Series is actor John Turturro for his role in Apple TV's Severance. He competes against John Lithgow for The Old Man (FX), Jonathan Pryce for The Crown (Netflix), Tyler James Williams for Abbott Elementary (ABC) and Henry Winkler for Barry (HBO).

Elizabeth Debicki for her role as Princess Diana in Netflix's The Crown and Sheryl Lee Ralph for her performance in ABC's Abbott Elementary could take the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Series. They lead the Golden Globes polls for this category against Hannah Einbinder, for Hacks (HBO Max); Julia Garner, for Ozark (Netflix); and, Janelle James, for Abbott Elementary (ABC).

In the miniseries category, all signs point to the second season of The White Lotus to be the winner. HBO's Max has every chance of winning Best Limited Series or Miniseries at the Golden Globes, and one of its leads, Jennifer Coolidge, is the likely choice to win Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries.

In Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Miniseries, Amanda Seyfried is the favorite for her role as Elizabeth Holmes in Disney Plus' The Dropout. On the other hand, the Golden Globe for Best Leading Actor in a Miniseries could go to Colin Firth for his role in HBO Max's The Starcaise.
