Joe Biden criticized legislation proposed by Senator Lindsey Graham to restrict abortion nation wide after the first 15 weeks of gestation. During a Democratic National Committee fundraiser, the president called the bill extreme and claimed that the Catholic Church is less strict on the issue than Republicans in Congress. However, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) supported Graham's bill and defended the right to life from the moment of gestation.
"The Catholic Church remains clear and consistent in affirming that true justice demands the right to life.the most basic of human and civil rights, to each child, from conception onward," wrote Archbishop William E. Lori, chairman of the USCCB's Committee on Pro-Life Activities, in a letter thanking Graham for his bill.
Biden insists
Despite the Church's clear position on abortion, Joe Biden stated that the Catholic Church allows exceptions in cases of rape and incest. "My generic point, and I happen to be a practicing Roman Catholic, is that my church doesn't even make that argument now," he added.
Graham's bill is hampered by a Democratic-controlled Senate. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the proposal "wildly out of sync with what Americans believe."
After being revoked Roe vs. Wade last July, the controversy over abortion, far from abating, seems to be intensifying.
