Brazil decides its future in tense elections

Polls shows Lula da Silva has a wide lead over Jair Bolsonaro and he could be named president in the first round.

After an intense and violent electoral campaign, characterized by insults between the two main candidates for victory, the moment of truth has arrived to Brazil. The ballot box will decide, unless Jair Bolsonaro refuses to recognize the results, whether the left will return to power under the hand of former president Lula da Silva or whether the current president will remain in office for another four years.

"Today is the day of democracy"

At press time, the two main candidates had already cast their votes without incident. Lula wanted to upload the moment to social media with a photo of his official photographer, Ricardo Stuckert. Under the phrase "today is the day of democracy," the former president uploaded a photo of himself kissing the ballot before voting in Sao Paulo.

Bolsonaro reiterated from Rio de Janeiro, where he exercised his right to vote, his doubts about the fairness of the election results. The President stated: "With clean elections, may the best man win, without any problem."

Trump's support for Bolsonaro

The current president wanted to share the support from former U.S. President Donald Trump in a video posted in the last few hours, as well as that of former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanhayu and Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó.

At the moment, there is fear of politically motivated assaults and voting incidents among the majority of citizens, according to surveys. No wonder. Several people have been killed for their ideology by people from the other side. Fights and aggressions have been on the agenda among supporters of both candidates.
