'Avatar: The Way of Water' surpasses $2 billion in gross revenue

The Avatar sequel got off to a shaky start. Its box office performance during its first weeks in theaters was not what Cameron and the rest of the cast and crew desired. It grossed about $100 million less than projected on opening weekend. However, little by little, audiences flocked to the movies and, in just six weeks in theaters, it reached $2 billion in box office sales.

With Avatar and The Way of Water, James Cameron now has made three films that have exceeded $2 billion in revenue.

Long way to go to catch the original

Some project that Avatar: The Way of Water will surpass the original Avatar at the box office. With the $2,923,706,026 in gross sales in 2009, the year of its release, the first film occupies the top spot in the ranking of highest-grossing films in history. The sequel has just under $1 billion to go to surpass it.

James Cameron's production still has a long way to go to be the highest grossing film in history. In addition to Avatar, the following films are also ahead:
