Argentina on to semifinals, only Hispanic team remaining

A great match between “La Albiceleste” and the Netherlands was settled in a penalty shootout. Emiliano Martinez is the hero for Argentina.

The first semi-final matchup in the 2022 World Cup has been confirmed. Argentina will face Croatia after eliminating the Netherlands in a penalty shootout. It was a match full of emotion, goals, tension and moments to remember. “La Albiceleste” keep alive their dream of winning their third World Cup and their first since 1986.

The first half saw the goal that opened the scoring but little more. It was a drab performance by both teams. Only Messi was able to add some color with a masterful assist to Nahuel Molina (1-0) to take the early lead.

In the second half, Argentina began to control the ball and generate more chances. Leo Messi came close to widening the gap on the scoreboard with a free kick that went just wide of the crossbar.

The second goal of the match came in the 73rd minute when Messi (2-0) scored from the penalty spot to give La Albiceleste peace of mind.

Weghorst gave hope

After the second Argentine goal, the Netherlands did not let up and quickly went in search of an equalizer with courage and determination.

Wout Weghorst (2-1) started the Dutch comeback with an impeccable header. The striker had not even been on the field for five minutes.

The excitement in the stadium was tangible as the Netherlands closed the gap on the scoreboard. With just moments left before the referee blew the final whistle, Weghorst (2-2) scored after a strategic move by the Dutch off a set piece to send the game into extra time. The striker unleashed jubilation among the Dutch fans, much to the dismay of the Argentineans. What a crazy game!

Extra time

In the first part of the extra time, the fatigue was noticeable. Neither team really threatened its opponent.

In the second period of extra time, however, Argentine manager Lionel Scaloni brought on veteran Angel Di Maria, a surprise move. Argentina was lifted by the winger's presence and had several chances to win, including a shot off the post by Enzo Fernandez.

Ultimately, neither team could score, and the second quarter-final went to a penalty shootout.

Argentina to the semifinals!

Argentina qualified for the semifinals after defeating the Netherlands on penalties. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was the hero for the Albiceleste, saving two of the four penalty kicks taken by the Dutch.

Lautaro Martinez sent his team through with a near perfect penalty. The dream is still alive for Argentina (and Messi) to win the country’s third World Cup.
