Actress Angela Lansbury dies at age 96

Audiences will always remember Lansbury's face on the small screen, where she played novelist Jessica Fletcher on 'Murder, She Wrote.'

Angela Lansbury, star of the television series Murder, She Wrote, died Tuesday at the age of 96 in Los Angeles.

The British actress, a legendary Hollywood actress and star of films such as Gaslight and The Picture of Dorian Gray, passed away "peacefully in her sleep at home" on Tuesday, her children announced. It was just five days before the actress's 97th birthday.

The film star received a lifetime achievement Oscar (in addition to three Academy Award nominations), six Golden Globes, a Grammy and 18 Emmy nominations. She also won five Tony Awards and a BAFTA award. Lansbury was also awarded the National Medal of Arts and holds a Kennedy Center Honor.

Angela Brigid Lansbury was born on Oct. 16, 1925 in London. She was the daughter of Belfast-born actress Moyna MacGill and Edgar Lansbury. The actress was introduced to the world of theater on the London stage at The Old Vic. Her family emigrated to the United States in 1940 due to the Nazi bombardment of London during World War II. She studied acting in New York and came to Hollywood through MGM.
